NARLabs Directs the Transformation of Local Industry and Promotes Taiwanese Biomedical Technology on the Global Market

With the rapid development of biomedical technologies, the biotechnology industry in Taiwan has experienced extremely fast growth as well. According to Business Monitor International (BMI), the global medical equipment market was valued at US$3,239 billion in 2015 and is projected to reach US$3,825 billion in 2018. Attracted by high profit and high value, leading international manufacturers continue to invest in R&D, while numerous new companies around the world join the industry.

On 14th July 2016, NARLabs, Tongtai Machine & Tool, China Steel, and TTMC launched a 3D-printing Joint Laboratory in Hsinchu Biomedical Park to develop medical material and manufacturing equipment domestically.

To promote biotechnology and medical equipment on the global market, the Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) of National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs) strives to facilitate cross-industry cooperation within medical material supply chain and helps in improving the capacities of local industries for medical material and equipment manufacturing. Recently, ITRC has assisted ThinTech Materials Technology Co. (TTMC) in becoming Taiwan's first manufacturer to pass preclinical (animal) testing for me

The 3D printing technology is widely applied in the medical industry and has become a leading popular new technology. To strengthen the competitive advantage of Taiwan's industry in medical grade 3D-printing manufacturing, "NARLabs Medical Instrument Value Creation Alliance" was established in 2014 and is headquartered in ITRC. The alliance actively expands the industry value through chain integration, in which Tongtai Machine & Tool and TTMC are key strategic partners. Further, on 14th July 2016, NARLabs, Tongtai Machine & Tool, China Steel, and TTMC launched a 3D-printing Joint Laboratory in Hsinchu Biomedical Park to develop medical material and manufacturing equipment domestically, and announced a collaboration to promote Taiwanese biotech and medical equipment on the global market.

Chairman Jui-Hsiung Yen of Tongtai Machine & Tool stated that through technology introduction and medical clinical support from NARLabs, a biomedical supply chain can be established in Taiwan. Furthermore, via new laboratory openings and expanding global marketing channels will lead to Taiwanese medical equipment brands being promoted in the global market.

Dr. Jeng-Jang Ou of China Steel stated that the government has designated the biomedical industry to be one of next key developing industries. To meet the demand for high-end product applications, China Steel has begun titanium plate production and is actively working on biocompatible verification.

TTMC, Tongtai Machine & Tool, and China Steel are global manufacturers that are committed to local development. Their cooperation to establish a joint manufacturing lab in Hsinchu Biomedical Park will greatly benefit the Taiwanese medical industry.

For opening the door to biomedical technology and integrating into the global market, NARLabs anticipates increased affiliation with domestic medical equipment manufacturers to create more diverse high-value-added products and intends to promote the Taiwanese medical materials industry on the world stage.
