New tools for predicting typhoons

The FORMOSAT-3 (Taiwan's Formosa satellite mission #3)/COSMIC (constellation observing system for meteorology, ionosphere and climate) is a joint Taiwan/US space mission (FC3) for weather, climate, space weather and geodetic research. To enhance the potential application of a planned observing FC3, a workshop was held from September 3-4, 2009 at the Central Weather Bureau in Taipei, Taiwan. The workshop focused on the promising impact of COSMIC radio occultation data on the regional weather analysis and the numerical prediction of typhoons in the vicinity of Taiwan by the means of recent observing system simulation experiments (OSSE). More than 130 researchers in the fields of meteorology, climatology and space science, including leading scientists from Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University, and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) of the US’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), took part in the workshop deliberation for the next step of action.
