To demonstrate the core development of Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City (SSGESC), Tainan City, as a smart-tech hub, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), holds the event “Smart-tech Shalun, Four-centuries-old Tainan, the World and Taiwan” from April 27 to April 29, combined with the 400th anniversary of the establishment of Tainan, the city’s local cultures and Shalun’s technological innovation. The event is characterized by forums, briefings on research achievements, and popular science activities, all of which are open to the public. The central government joins hands with the local authorities through the mechanism of industry-academia cooperation, showing Shalun’s bright prospects as a pivotal development center for the smart technology industry and sharing the pride growing up of Taiwan’s prosperity.
In line with the central government’s "five plus two innovative industries plan", the Executive Yuan, coordinating the joint efforts of thirteen ministries from NSTC, the National Development Council (NDC), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), etc., establishes SSGESC as a demonstration site for new technologies, new designs, and new applications, which propels the R&D capabilities of Greater South to prominence.
Since the operation of SSGESC on November 6, 2016, the research energies of key technologies have converged here. Driven by the Executive Yuan, together with all the ministries and councils, SSGESC currently has seven resident key technologies in the domain of Taiwan’s industry and academia: Cybersecurity, space technology, quantum science, smart transportation (AI-chip self-service carriers), Net Zero technology, smart agriculture, and smart healthcare, each of them set up in Area C (NSTC Cyber Security & Smart Technology R&D Building and Taiwan CAR Lab), D (Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site), E (Academia Sinica South Campus), and X (Shalun Medical Service and Innovation Park), respectively.
As Chien-Jen Chen, President of the Executive Yuan, puts it, Tainan, witnessing a four-hundred-year transformation since its establishment, is the pride of Taiwan. Now, we envision the development of high-tech research and industries, which is above anything else. NSTC holds the event “Smart-tech Shalun, Four-centuries-old Tainan, the World and Taiwan,” manifesting the future trend of technological development in the next century from Tainan City throughout Taiwan. The event not only enables the public to get a taste of the latest forward-looking technologies but also introduces them to Smart-tech Shalun, one that is utterly different from the past.
According to Tsung-Tsong Wu, Minister Without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan and Minister of NSTC, to expose the public to the history of Tainan’s urban development over the past four centuries as well as the research potential and future development of SSGESC, NSTC welcomes the public to the open event so that they will get to know the efforts injected by the unsung heroes in the fields of technology and the remarkable achievements they have obtained.
NSTC encourages the public to participate in various guided tours and activities. For example, they can visit the Taiwan CAR LAB and take a ride of an autonomous car, or visit ACW SOUTH, which is affiliated to the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC), at the Cyber Security & Smart Technology R&D Building. Moreover, the TRITON special exhibition and parent-child popular science activities, organized by the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA), are suitable for children. There are briefings on components of indigenous satellites that are intended for experts and scholars. What’s more, the public can get a taste of smart healthcare technology. Those interested in Net Zero technology can visit the Subtropical Performance-Testbed for Innovative Energy Research in Buildings (SPINLab) and the Taisugar Circular Village, both in Area D. In the event are other exhibitions featuring an abundance of the latest research results of quantum science and smart agriculture. NSTC warmly invites the public to take a look and realize how Shalun lights up the World and Taiwan with its smart technology.
