Successful Launch of SR-10 Science Experiment

The Sounding Rocket 10 (SR-10) science mission of the National Space Organization (NSPO), National Applied Research Laboratory (NARLabs), was successfully launched from the Gio-Perng base in Pin-Tung at 11:10 AM on October 7. It accomplished the dynamic measurements of the thermosphere and the ionosphere between 90 and 286 km in the upper atmosphere of southern Taiwan.

In the SR-10 mission, there are six ionosphere science payloads and an unprecedented spin control device developed by the team. The in-situ measurements of neutral particles, ions, electrons and magnetic data along the flight trajectory can be used in assisting the atmospheric data analyses through remote sensing of FORMOSAT-3 and FORMOSAT-7 satellites. And, the spin control device of SR-10 has accurately reduced the spin rates of the rocket which was conducive to the measurements of the scientific data.

The first stage of SR-10 burnt out and separated 6 seconds after it was launched at 11:10, then the second stage was ignited at 12 seconds and burnt out at 43 seconds. The rocket soared with the momentum generated and commenced a de-spin device to reduce its spin rate from 4 rps to about 1.1 rps. At 58 seconds after launch, the rocket reached 82 km altitude where the nose-cone fairing was opened and jettisoned, and with the deployments of the onboard Langmuir probe, Magneto-Resistive Magnetometer and Ion Energy Analyzer followed.

Other instruments activated at this time include a newly developed Neutral Particle Analyzer and two more sensors, Magnetic Field Measurement Magnetometer and Sun Aspect Sensor, acquired through collaboration with JAXA. The rocket started to descend after reaching its apogee of 286 km at 270 seconds. Then, it reentered the atmosphere and concluded the flight experiment before plunging into the ocean at 520 seconds. All data were transmitted to the ground receiving station through telemetry system onboard for the purpose of flight data post-processing and scientific data analysis.
