Kids expanded computer animation skills at summer camps

The National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) conducted two science summer camps for kids and teens. The first camp was designed for elementary school students, organized with the department of hydraulic and ocean engineering of National Cheng Kung University, and held at NCHC’s Advanced Networking Business Unit in Tainan County from August 18-20. In the camp, the kids leaed to use NCHC’s digital paddy field and Scratch, a computer animation program, to expand their knowledge of paddy functions in agriculture, economics, and hydrology. The second camp was designed for high school students and kids with knowledge of ROBOT C programming language, organized with the department of automation engineering of Ta Hwa Institute of Technology and the culture service club of National Chiao Tung University, and held at NCHC’s HPC Business Unit in Hsinchu County from August 19-21. In this camp, the teens were guided through a hands-on experience to use the LEGO Robotics System to design, build and program their robots from scratch. In both camps, campers not only accumulated skills in computer animation, engineering, hydrology and physics, they also leaed valuable leadership and project management skills that will help them throughout their life. Both camps attracted more applicants than 30 campers each camp could admit.
