Collaboration Between NCHC and CHPC, south Africa

The Republic of South Africa is preparing to set up a Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC). After several visits at NCHC, both sides signed a memorandum that NCHC would pROVide the consultancy to CHPC to establish high performance computing related services and the know-how of facility management that includes computers, networks and visualization service. CHPC expects this technology exchange will enable them to become a major driver of scientific research and innovation, pROViding service to researchers in various scientific and engineering disciplines, as well as to industry. From June 23 to July 4 ,2008, CHPC sent their visualization team leader to work with the NCHC visualization and interactive media lab (VIML). NCHC releases the self-developed graphics library to CHPC and other virtual reality (VR) and visualization applications, in hopes that those tools will enable CHPC to help the South Africa scientific research community explore their results. CHPC staff also received hands-on training for the basic ability to display VR environment. This exchange, has established a basis for future cooperation, to share certain technical skills to help South Africa to establish high performance computing technology and facilities.
