Taiwan-Czech Lighpath has been successfully lit up

After the successful demonstration of long-distance live telesurgery in 10/2007, TWAREN taskforce and CESNET both look for establishing direct optical communication channel over GLIF lambda testbed. With the assistance from NetherLight, an end-to-end Taiwan-Czech Lighpath is lit up on Feb 12th. Geographically this intercontinental lightpath crosses Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, connecting Asia and Europe through the coast to coast path of North America. The lightpath goes through four national research and education networks including TWAREN/TaiwanLight, CA*Net4 (Canada), GEANT2 (Pan-Europe) and CESNET/CzechLight, with the trans-Atlantic part of this logical circuit donated by IEEAF. The total span of this lightpath exceeds 35,000 kilometers which probably sets a new world record. "This lightpath will be used in collaborations like high definition video transmission, telesurgery and advanced network technologies pROVing with Taiwan in the future." Dr. Jiri Navratil said. By fully utilizing the low transmission delay and guaranteed bandwidth advantages of lightpath technology, this ground breaking lightpath will significantly reduce the information barrier between Taiwan and Europe, therefore greatly enhancing the international collaborations and network technology development.
