Speech Delivery: Micro and nanoelectronics within CSIC

Speaker: Prof. EMILIO LORA-TAMAYO D’OCON, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Spain Time : 10:30-11:30 AM, March 27, 2007 (Tuesday) Place : Conference Room 307B, NDL Abstract : CSIC is the acronym for Spanish National Council for Research. After drawing a very general picture of the research organization in Spain, with some qualitative and quantitative data to frame the CSIC, the talk will concentrate in microelectronics-microsystems and the emerging nano activities within CNM - National Center for Microelectronics, one of the main institution belonging to CSIC. The "nano" activities are clustered with similar and complementary skills and knowledge coming from other research entities located, as CNM, in the Bellaterra-pole (campus Autonomous University of Barcelona). All this ongoing activities and the short and medium term plans will be depicted. Biographical notes : Prof. Emilio Lora-Tamayo D'Ocon was awarded the Orden del Mérito Civil (Spain), Encomienda de número (2003) and the Silver Medal of CSIC (2004). Besides being with the Electronics Department of UAB, he is the Vice Director of Inst. of Microelectronics de Barcelona (IMB)-CNM, coordinating the Nano&Micro Large Scale Facility. He was the President of CSIC between Feb 2003 - May 2004. He has served many important positions such as Vice-President of Scientific and Technological Research, CSIC (1996-2003), Deputy Director of the Inst. of Microelectronics, IMM-CSIC (1995-1996), Scientific Director of the Inst. of Microelectronics, CNM-CSIC (1985-1993), Vice President and President of the Nacional Board for Astronomy, etc. Remarks : NSC, Taiwan and CSIC, Spain cooperation program calls for proposals annually. Three mid-term (2-year) bilateral research projects are granted every year. The number and execution period of granted projects may be increased in the future. Through this talk, the attendees will realize the potential opportunities of research collaborations with the institutions in Spain.
